E’ questo il sentimento di cui parla Genaro, disse don Juan. Per diventare uno stegone un uomo deve essere appassionato. Un uomo appassionato ha sulla terra cose che gli appartengono e cose che gli sono care, se non altro il sentiero che percorre.. Genaro ha lasciato la sua passione a Ixtlan: la sua casa, la sua gente, tutte le cose a cui teneva. E ora vaga nei suoi sentimenti; e qualche volta, come ha detto, quasi arriva a ixtlan. Tutti noi l’abbiamo in comune.

Si può sopravvivere sul sentiero della conoscenza solo vivendo come un guerriero, disse. perché l’arte del guerriero consiste nell’equilibrare il terrore dell’essere uomo con la meraviglia dell’essere uomo.
